Fire signaling - ALLPRA.pt
Fire safety signage in Portugal is regulated by several legal decrees that ensure buildings, premises, and establishments comply with fire safety requirements (SCIE). If you have an online store selling safety equipment or signage, this text will help clarify the legal requirements and highlight what you must guarantee in your products – valuable information for both you and your customers.
⚖ Portuguese Legislation and Standards
These are the main laws and regulations governing fire safety signage in Portugal:
Legal Decree / Regulation: What it stipulates / where it applies : Decree-Law No. 220/2008, of November 12 – Legal Regime for Fire Safety in Buildings (SCIE): Establishes the general regime for fire safety in buildings. Law No. 123/2019, of October 18: Amends Decree-Law 220/2008, introducing updates to the SCIE legal regime. Ministerial Order No. 1532/2008, of December 29 – RT-SCIE (Technical Regulation of SCIE): Approves the technical standards relating to fire safety, including signage, dimensions, location, photoluminescent requirements, among others. Ministerial Order No. 135/2020, of June 2: Makes changes to the RT-SCIE, especially regarding escape routes, self-protection measures and safety signage. Decree-Law No. 141/95, of June 14th, regulates the general principles of prevention in the context of occupational safety, hygiene and health, transposing Directive 92/58/EEC on safety signage. Ministerial Order No. 1456-A/95, of December 11th (amended by Ministerial Order No. 178/2015), regulates the characteristics of safety signage: material, pictograms, colors, formats, installation. Applicable Portuguese/International Standards: • NP EN ISO 7010 (standardized graphic symbols) • ISO 3864 • ISO 16069 (ground-level signage for evacuation routes) • NP 4386 (emergency plans)
🛠 Main Signage Requirements
Based on Portuguese legislation, here is what fire safety signage must guarantee:
- Suitable materials : Signs should be made of rigid or photoluminescent materials that ensure visibility even in low light conditions or power outages.
- Standardized symbols and pictograms : Use pictograms according to NP EN ISO 7010, ISO 3864, etc.
- Size, shape and mounting according to applicable Standards or Ordinances – must be suitable for the location (mounting height, visibility, distance).
- Signage indicating escape routes, emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire hydrants , and other first-response equipment.
- Emergency building plans – indicating evacuation routes, fire extinguishers, etc.
-
Legal responsibility to keep signage visible, unobstructed, in good condition and with the characteristics required by law. The ANEPC (National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority) may apply fines and sanctions in case of non-compliance.
📈 The Importance of Complying with Legislation — SEO and the Benefits of Trust
Including these legal references on your website has several advantages:
- It instills confidence in customers — they know they are buying products that comply with the law.
- You can improve your SEO by using terms that your audience searches for, such as "SCIE standards," "photoluminescent signage Portugal," and "RT-SCIE."
- It reduces the risk of returns or disputes if a product is deemed non-compliant.

Emergency and Fire Signage: Safety that Saves Lives
In any environment — whether residential, commercial, or corporate — emergency and fire safety signage is essential to ensure safety and protection. Signs indicating escape routes, emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and fire hydrants help people quickly orient themselves in risky situations, preventing accidents and preserving lives.
Emergency signage facilitates evacuation in critical situations, indicating meeting points, exits, and first aid equipment. Fire safety signage ensures that fire extinguishers, alarms, and hydrants are always visible, allowing for quick and efficient action in case of fire.
Investing in quality signage isn't just about complying with regulations: it's about caring for people and protecting your assets. An online store specializing in safety signage offers durable, clear, and visible solutions that make any space safer and more prepared for emergencies.
Ensuring safety has never been easier — with the right signage, you protect lives and promote peace of mind in any environment.
